Here's hoping it's done a lot better than the weak Diablo effort.

- StarCraft came out 20 years ago and became one of the most popular and prominent esports ever made. Maddy Myers and Eric Van Allen of Compete were children when the game came out, but they grew up.
- Jun 24, 2020 Just be thankful that Starcraft remastered turned out to be at least a decent remaster of its glorious counterpart. If you have limited knowledge to the game or not at all, just buy remastered version on a sale and play the remastered campaign, play couple of matches with your pal, try the ladder for a few times, and move on with your life.
The game was remastered in 2020 under the title, Warcraft III: Reforged, but that didn't. RELATED: The 10 Best RTS Games To Play If You Like StarCraft.
I still play the original from time to time so even if it is literally a fresh coat of paint, I am A-OK with that.
Knowing Actiblizzard however we will probably get charged an assload for it...
Very nice! Can't wait, so many memories of the first one.
I wonder if this means they will do WC2/WC3/D1/D2 in HD as well.....basically printing money
I'd definitely look at this for the right price.
I wonder if they're still doing Diablo 2 HD as was rumoured?
...they did it to movies, now game makers are doing the same. Looks good too. Although animations don't seem to be smooth.
Honestly I love Starcraft but I have very little interest in this, the updated graphics don't even look that much better from the short video I saw
Will all come down to price, if it's like $60 I can't see it selling to well
Press Release
Evolution Complete! Blizzard Entertainment Announces StarCraft®: Remastered
The groundbreaking sci-fi real-time strategy game remastered in 4K Ultra High Definition, to include all content from the original award-winning game and its renowned expansion, StarCraft: Brood War®.
StarCraft: Remastered maintains the gameplay and balance that set the standard for the RTS genre, while updating graphics and audio, and adding matchmaking, ladder, social features, and more!
IRVINE, California—March 27, 2017—One of the highest rated, most celebrated games of all time has evolved. Blizzard Entertainment today unveiled StarCraft®: Remastered, a reverently crafted modernization of the original award-winning real-time strategy game. StarCraft: Remastered will offer a full graphical overhaul of the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War® expansion, while preserving the sublime gameplay that captivated millions of gamers around the world and served as the foundation for professional global esports.
“StarCraft is a pure distillation of Blizzard’s DNA—its story, its balance, and all the little details reflect our long-running commitment to epic entertainment, and it’s been a staple in competitive gaming and esports for almost 20 years,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “With StarCraft: Remastered, we’re modernizing the original game’s visuals, audio, and online support to ensure that players can enjoy StarCraft for another 20 years and beyond.”
The remastered graphics and audio will bring a modern look and feel to the timeless classic, with widescreen UHD support for up to 4K resolution. Other updates will include new illustrations to enhance storytelling in the StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War campaign missions; advanced matchmaking; full connectivity to Blizzard’s gaming network for social features and updates; cloud saving for campaign progress, custom maps, replays, and keybinds; support for eight new languages in addition to the original five; and more. While these improvements will bring StarCraft to the modern era, gameplay and balance have been precisely preserved, for an experience that will feel identical to veteran players.
Blizzard is developing StarCraft: Remastered for release on Windows® and Mac® PCs, with an anticipated release date this summer. Pricing and related information on StarCraft: Remastered will be announced at a later date. Prepare to venture once again onto the planetary battlefields of the war-torn Koprulu Sector; command the forces of the zerg, protoss, and terrans in their struggle for galactic domination; relive the epic saga of Marshal Jim Raynor, Kerrigan, and Praetor Fenix; or just vie for the GG against fellow players in this rejuvenated version of the online competitive RTS that set the bar for an entire genre.

In preparation for StarCraft: Remastered, Blizzard Entertainment will update StarCraft: Brood War later this week to version 1.18. The update will include bug fixes and improvements, including the ability to rebind keys; observer mode; modern anti-cheat measures; compatibility improvements for Windows 7, 8.1, and 10; and more. Once the update is live, StarCraft Anthology, which includes the original game and the Brood War expansion, will be free to download and play
As someone who hasn't played SC/BW in a long time but has followed the Korean pro scene on and off for a while, this is pretty exciting. I'm looking forward equally to playing through the campaign again, and watching some Flash vs Jaedong in HD.
It was great to hear that they actually brought Flash, Jaedong, Bisu and Stork in to playtest it, and it has their approval.
I wonder if this means they will do WC2/WC3/D1/D2 in HD as well
It sounds like Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 might be on the horizon:

I admit I would love a reason to get back into the original StarCraft, played the crap out of both SP and MP back in the day. Widescreen support would be great. I would be pretty happy to pick this up unless it was ridiculously expensive.

What do you reckon the odds are that anyone who currently has the original SC and BW on their Blizzard account get a free upgrade?
0%? I think so too.
I'm more of a WC fan myself, but might give this a burl if the price is good as I never played Brood War and I've heard good things.

I'm happy to pay a bit for the (seemingly small) amount of work they have done, I'm just not going to pay $60-$70 for a 20 year old game and its expansion with a new coat of paint.
I never played Brood War and I've heard good things.
Single player Brood War campaign was about as good as the original campaign (some say better). Multi player was much the same, with a few new units and map types to mix things up.
I'd rather just keep playing the StarCraft Mass Recall mod for SC2, the amount of work that's been put into it is phenomenal.

Mass Recall is certainly good, but it's not the same thing.

Well, people who bought SC/BW back in the day are probably 95% of their market for this, so there'd be no point doing it for free.
I'd happily pay $30-$40, but I guess we'll find out in the coming months.
I'm hoping it does well enough that giving Frozen Throne the same treatment becomes a no-brainer for them.

Well the actual campaign maker loaded all graphics and units at whatever your screen resolution was( at least it could at 1280x1024 back when I was playing SC) so I guess there wasn't that much they really had to do to make SC1 HD.

0% sounds about right as Blizzard aren't the type of company who would give away a remasterd or GOTY edition for free to previous owners like say Skyrim.
This doesn't sound like fun for those of us that haven't been playing this since release lol.

Maybe, but I would have said the same about Bethesda a year ago, So it's certainly possible (But I doubt it).
This is only exciting because it means they might do wc3 soon.
Not excited. The enhanced visuals look bad and I was never into the ladder.
I played the campaign over and over as a kid but this is just underwhelming.
If they did a proper overhaul with a totally new graphical engine I'd gladly pay $60 or more.
I was also underwhelmed by the new graphics, I couldn't see much of a difference haha
This is only exciting because it means they might do wc3 soon.
I'd much rather a WC3 remaster than SC. After all, to me Sc2 feels so close to a remaster in the first place, seems a bit redundant
Original version will be made free to download:

Same for me – if at least looked as good as SC2 It might be worth a look but the 'upgrade' is barely noticeable.
Yeah I agree people might as well just get the free copy and stick with that lol. Have they announced pricing yet for this?
I think it's safe to say if you think this looks worse than SC2, you're not the target demographic for this. This is for the people that thought SC2 was a step backwards from Brood War.
It is curious that they started with StarCraft. I agree the hype/demand would have been higher for wc3 considering sc2 and all. Maybe they just felt the compatibility issues/crappy bnet of StarCraft, and all the assets they have from making sc2 make it an easier one to start with.
This thread should really be tagged pc online too.
If this is a decent price I'll pick it up for the remastered campaign.
I don't give the slightest damn about multiplayer.

I assume this wasn't made by the Blizzard team, but it's certainly the poorest CGI I've ever seen with a Blizzard stamp on it.
Still, super excited! I can't believe I'm going to pay for this, but I know I'll put in stupid hours.
SC remastered trailer!
That's silly out of all countries why would this happen in Korea?
Oh wait :)

I'm waiting for a d2 remastered :)
So how many people here have pre-ordered this?
I did, looking forward to reliving some great memories in 4k

*raises hand*
I adore the first game. I'm most interested to see how much has changed through the campaign. Voices and things.
Downloading on Blizzard app or whatever they're calling it this week. It will be good to get back to this classic.
I played a couple of the campaign missions. Just the quick intro ones. Still very retro but very nicely remastered. Definitely plenty of respect shown to the original classic. They even left the low res 'Blizzard Entertainment' splash screen on launch lol.
'I'm Jim Raynor, Marshal of these parts'
GET EXCITED LADS
I'm Jim Raynor
This is probably the best human name in video game history. Just sounds so majestic.
'This is Jimmy!'
Just tried to have a few games, it was laggy af.
Online latency?
There were allot of problems yesterday with the servers and logging in and the ladder etc. Hopefully they get them solved quickly.
I got a hard crash to computer restart when playing yesterday which was pretty odd, but it was so cool to see in action, much better seeing in person than on streams. The F5 switch is amazing. Not sure how much of this I'll play but happy to support the development regardless. If D2 and wc3 get the same treatment that would be awesome.
Where is the best place to buy this?
$21 on battle.net is not bad though
I dont remember buying and can find no record of buying this but, the Blizz app started downloading it when I launched it tonight.....
EDIT: Bah it downloads and only plays in SD, HD you need to pay. Bloody teases.

Yeah the original sc1 has been free since april
Tried a few custom games with the AI just now. The AI is still terrible, but I'm pretty happy with the visuals. Being able to zoom in during gameplay, and out during replays is pretty cool!
I've been wondering, and unable to find out, does the game menu let you switch between the old audio and the remastered audio?
I really dislike the re-recorded music and if that is forced on, I really can't be bothered buying and playing this.

from my goggling a few weeks back, looks like it is only available on battle.net, except Korea has a limited edition in retail box, which apparently was pre-sold out within minutes..........
Hey, you can change back and forth from the New to the Old graphics engine with the press of a button (F5), that's really cool!
